Leatherworking in Rajasthan dates back hundreds of years. The craft was historically practised by specialist leather artisans whose skills were passed down through generations within family workshops. The techniques developed over centuries — saddle stitching, hand-burnishing, vegetable tanning — are the same techniques used by the finest craftsmen today.
Walk through the leather workshops of Jaipur or Jodhpur and you will find craftsmen in their 60s teaching their grandchildren techniques that their own grandfathers taught them. The depth of knowledge embedded in these workshops is extraordinary.

India is one of the world's largest producers of leather. The buffalo and goat hides available to Indian craftsmen are among the finest available globally — dense grain, excellent durability, and a response to tanning and conditioning that produces some of the most beautiful patinas in the world.
Vegetable tanning — the traditional method
The best Indian leather craftsmen still use vegetable tanning — a slow, traditional process using natural tannins from tree bark rather than chemical chrome tanning used in industrial production. Vegetable-tanned leather takes longer to produce but is stronger, develops a better patina, and is genuinely more environmentally friendly.
