The kit strap that comes with your camera is functional in the same way a plastic bag is functional — it does the job, barely, and looks terrible. A leather camera strap is different. It is comfortable, secure, develops character with use, and tells the world you take photography seriously.
Types of camera strap
Neck strap
The classic. Hangs the camera in front of you for fast access. Best for event photographers, street photographers, and anyone who shoots quickly. Padding on the neck contact area is essential for heavier cameras.
Shoulder/sling strap
Crosses the body from shoulder to hip. Keeps the camera accessible on one side while reducing neck strain. Good for travel photographers carrying camera plus bag simultaneously.
Wrist strap
Wraps around the wrist and keeps the camera in your hand. Preferred by portrait and studio photographers who want maximum control. Not suitable for heavy DSLRs over long periods.
Width and padding — the comfort equation
- 20-25mm: Fine for mirrorless and lighter cameras
- 38-40mm: Good for standard DSLRs
- 50mm+: Recommended for heavy DSLR setups with large lenses
Attachment type
- Split rings through lug: The standard. Secure but can be fiddly to attach initially.
- Quick release clips: Excellent for photographers who switch between straps regularly.
- Loop through lug: Minimalist and secure. Requires a thinner strap end.
Whatever attachment you choose — check the rated load capacity. A strap rated for 5kg on a 1.5kg camera body gives you significant safety margin.
Why leather over nylon
Nylon straps stretch, fray at the edges, and feel synthetic against skin. Leather grips your shoulder and neck naturally — it does not slide around during use. It also softens and moulds to your body over time, becoming genuinely more comfortable the more you use it. A quality leather strap develops a patina that reflects your time behind the camera.
Personalisation as a gift idea
A leather camera strap with a photographer's name or initials embossed on it is one of the most thoughtful camera gifts available. Personal, practical, and something they will use every single time they pick up their camera.
Our leather camera straps are handmade in Rajasthan from full-grain leather, available in multiple widths, and can be personalised with name or initials.
