Most backpacks are designed for one use. Gym bags that look wrong in the office. Work bags that cannot handle travel. The leather backpack that genuinely does both is rarer than you think — but the criteria for finding one are straightforward.
The size question
- Daily commute and work: 15-20 litres. Holds laptop, documents, daily essentials without bulk.
- Work plus occasional weekend travel: 25-30 litres. The most versatile size. Fits in overhead bins, big enough for 2-3 nights.
- Regular travel: 35-40 litres. Replaces carry-on luggage.
The laptop compartment
For work use, this is non-negotiable. Check whether the sleeve is padded, the exact dimensions, and whether the laptop can be accessed through a dedicated back panel — important for airport security.
The back panel and shoulder straps
A leather backpack is heavier than a nylon one. Look for padded shoulder straps with at least 20mm of padding, a contoured back panel with some airflow structure, and a sternum strap for heavier loads.
Organisation
A good leather travel backpack has one main compartment, one front pocket for quick-access items, one organisation pocket with card slots and a key clip, and a side water bottle pocket.
Why leather works for both travel and work
A leather backpack does not look out of place in a meeting, at an airport, or on a hiking trail. No other material manages this range. Canvas looks too casual for a boardroom. Nylon looks too functional for a dinner meeting. Leather reads as intentional in every context.
Breaking in a new leather backpack
- Condition it before first use with a generous application of leather conditioner
- Load it with your normal daily carry for the first week
- The leather will mould to your carry habits — becoming more functional over time
What to avoid
- Leather-look nylon or PU backpacks marketed as leather
- Genuine leather grade backpacks — they crack within 3-4 years of daily use
- Decorative hardware that is not solid brass — it tarnishes and looks cheap quickly
