You are standing in a shop holding a bag. The label says leather. The price seems reasonable. But something feels slightly off. How do you know if it is the real thing? These seven tests work on any leather product and you can do all of them in under two minutes with no tools.
Test 1 — Smell it
Real leather has a distinctive, complex, slightly earthy smell. It is immediately recognisable once you know it. Synthetic leather smells of plastic, chemicals, or nothing at all. Earthy, organic smell = real. Chemical or plastic smell = fake.
Test 2 — Look at the edges
Find a cut edge — inside a pocket, along a strap, anywhere the material has been cut. Real leather will show rough, fibrous layers at the edge. Fake leather will show a smooth uniform edge, or clearly show a fabric layer with a thin surface coating. Fibrous, rough edge = real. Fabric backing with coating = fake.
Test 3 — Check the grain pattern
Look closely at the surface texture across a large area. Real leather has a natural, irregular grain — slight variations, no two areas identical. Fake leather has a perfectly repeated, machine-stamped pattern. Find the point where the pattern repeats and you know it is synthetic. Irregular natural variation = real. Repeating identical pattern = fake.
Test 4 — Drop water on it
Put one small drop of water on an inconspicuous area. Watch for 30 seconds. Real leather absorbs moisture — you will see a slightly darker patch. Fake leather repels water — the droplet will sit on the surface or roll off. Water absorbs in = real. Water beads on surface = fake.
Test 5 — Press your palm against it
Hold your palm flat and firm against the leather for 30 seconds. Real leather warms to your body temperature — it feels natural. Fake leather stays cooler and has a slightly plasticky resistance. Warms naturally = real. Stays cool and plastic = fake.
Test 6 — Bend a corner
Gently fold a small corner of the material. Real leather creases naturally and the crease fades when you release it. Fake leather either cracks at the fold or leaves a sharp, permanent crease line. Natural fold that recovers = real. Cracks or permanent crease = fake.
Test 7 — Check the back
If you can access the underside of the material, real leather has a suede-like, fibrous texture on the back. Fake leather has a fabric weave backing or a smooth synthetic surface. Suede-like fibrous back = real. Fabric weave or smooth back = fake.
One more thing — the price reality check
A full-grain leather bag made by hand costs money to produce. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. A £30 "leather" bag is not leather in any meaningful sense.
What grade of real leather should you buy?
Once you have confirmed something is real leather, check the grade. Full-grain is best. Top-grain is acceptable. "Genuine leather" — despite the name — is the lowest grade and ages poorly. Always ask.
