A full-grain leather bag can last 30 years with the right care. The routine is simple, the products are basic, and the result is a bag that gets better every year instead of worse.
The basic monthly routine
- Empty the bag completely
- Shake out dust and debris
- Wipe the entire exterior with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth
- Check the seams and hardware for any issues
- Leave open in a well-ventilated spot for an hour before storing
Conditioning — every 3 months
Leather is skin. Like skin, it dries out without moisture. Conditioning prevents cracking, keeps the leather supple, and deepens the colour naturally.
What to use: A dedicated leather conditioner like Leather Honey, Bickmore Bees Wax, or Saphir Renovateur. In a pinch, pure coconut oil works well. Avoid petroleum-based products and anything containing silicone.
- Clean the bag first with a slightly damp cloth and allow to dry
- Apply a very small amount of conditioner to a soft cloth
- Work it in with circular motions across the entire surface
- Leave for 15-20 minutes then buff off any excess
- Allow to dry fully before use
Handling scratches
Surface scratches on full-grain leather are not a problem — they are part of the character. For light scratches, rub firmly with your fingertip — the warmth and natural oils in your skin blend the scratch into the surrounding leather. Apply a tiny amount of conditioner and buff gently.
Handling water and rain
- Wipe off excess water with a dry cloth immediately
- Stuff the bag with newspaper to maintain its shape
- Allow to dry naturally at room temperature — away from radiators and direct sunlight
- Once fully dry, apply conditioner to restore moisture
Never use a hairdryer — heat dries leather too fast, causing it to crack permanently.
Removing stains
- Ink: Dab with a cotton bud dipped in rubbing alcohol. Work from the outside inward.
- Oil and grease: Sprinkle with cornstarch, leave overnight, brush off.
- Water stains: Dampen the entire panel evenly, then dry naturally.
- General dirt: Barely damp cloth followed by conditioning.
Storage
- Store stuffed with tissue paper to maintain shape
- Keep in a breathable dust bag — never in plastic
- Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight
- Never store compressed under heavy items
