The leather itself
Factory-made bags can use a range of leather types and finishes. Check the specific material and construction rather than assuming a quality level from the production method.
Handmade bags also vary in materials and construction. Ask which leather is used, how it is selected and which parts of the work are done by hand.
The stitching
Machine stitching varies by stitch type, thread, tension and reinforcement. Inspect seams and stress points; machine stitching does not automatically unravel when a single stitch breaks.
Saddle stitching is a hand-sewing method using two needles. Its performance still depends on the thread, stitch spacing, material and workmanship. No seam is immune to wear or damage.
The edges
Edge finishing varies across both handmade and factory-made bags. Look for smooth, consistent edges and a finish suited to the leather, and check how the edge will need to be maintained.
The hardware
Hardware performance depends on the alloy, finish, design and use. Check the stated material and inspect how fittings are attached, rather than judging by weight alone.
Solid brass can develop a patina, but it can still wear, tarnish or fail. Secure attachment points and an appropriate design matter alongside the hardware material.
The lifetime cost comparison
There is no reliable fixed lifespan for a bag based only on its price or whether it is handmade. Compare construction, intended use, care requirements and repair options. A bag you can maintain and use regularly may offer better value than one that does not suit your needs.
What to look for when buying
- Ask specifically whether the leather is full-grain
- Ask whether the stitching is machine or saddle-stitched
- Look at the edges — are they finished or raw?
- Check the hardware weight — solid brass feels noticeably heavier than zamak
- Ask who made it — a craftsman or an assembly line?
