Walk into any leather goods shop and you will see the words "genuine leather" used as a selling point. Here is the truth most brands won't tell you: genuine leather is actually one of the lowest quality grades available. Understanding leather grades is the single most important thing you can do before spending money on a leather product.
The four main leather grades
1. Full-grain leather — the best
Full-grain leather is cut from the outermost layer of the hide — the densest, tightest-grained part. It has not been sanded, buffed, or corrected in any way. The natural surface is preserved completely.

- Develops a rich patina over time — gets more beautiful with age
- Naturally water and moisture resistant
- Breathes — doesn't trap heat or sweat
- Lasts 20-30+ years with basic care

2. Top-grain leather — good quality
Top-grain leather is also cut from the upper layer of the hide, but it has been lightly sanded and sometimes coated to create a more uniform appearance. Still strong, but won't develop the dramatic patina of full-grain. Lifespan of 10-15 years with good care.
3. Genuine leather — misleading name
Despite the name, genuine leather is made from the lower layers of the hide — the parts left over after the upper grades are cut away. It is heavily processed and given an artificial surface coating to look presentable.
- Much weaker than upper grades
- Does not develop a patina — degrades instead
- Starts peeling and cracking within 2-5 years
When a brand says "genuine leather" without specifying the grade, it almost always means this.
4. Bonded leather — avoid
Bonded leather is made by grinding up leather scraps, bonding them with polyurethane, and embossing a leather-like pattern on the surface. It peels and flakes within 1-2 years and is essentially disposable.
